Does insurance cover therapy in Utah?
Deductibles, copays, and self-pay. The three questions to ask your plan before your first appointment.
Usually, yes — most commercial insurance plans in Utah cover outpatient mental health visits, including telehealth. But "covered" can mean very different out-of-pocket costs depending on your plan, so it's worth five minutes on the phone with your insurer before your first appointment.
The three questions to ask your plan
Call the member-services number on the back of your card and ask: First, "Does my plan cover outpatient mental health visits by telehealth?" Second, "Do I have a deductible to meet before coverage starts, and how much of it have I met?" Third, "What is my copay or coinsurance per session once the deductible is met?"
Those three answers tell you almost everything. A plan with a $40 copay and no mental-health deductible means you pay $40 per session from the start. A high-deductible plan may mean you pay the full session rate until the deductible is met — which surprises people who assumed "covered" meant "cheap."
What about self-pay?
Plenty of people choose to pay out of pocket even when they have insurance — sometimes because of a high deductible, sometimes for privacy (self-pay means no diagnosis is filed with an insurer), and sometimes because their preferred therapist is out of network. If you're weighing it, ask us about self-pay rates and we'll help you compare honestly.
